Handmaid's Halloween

Handmaid's Halloween

Some years I struggle a bit to come up with a fun, unique Halloween costume that I love, but this year that wasn't the case! I've been making pop culture themed costumes for the last few years and I wanted to continue the trend this year. My friend Amanda and I instantly knew we wanted to be Handmaids for Halloween after the first season of The Handmaid's Tale wrapped. We quickly got to work drafting our ideas.

Looking back, this costume isn't a DIY in the sense that I handcrafted it, it's more of a DIY in the sense that we put the look together ourselves instead of buying a prepackaged costume at a Halloween store. The one thing that I majorly dislike about Halloween are the generic store bought costumes that come prepackaged with all of the accessories needed, so unoriginal . I love watching my friends' personality and creativity shine through their Halloween works of art.

We wanted to have a "from Handmaids to ho" transformation mid-party so our costume consisted of two separate looks. The first was the traditional Handmaid look; red cloak, maxi skirt, bonnet and booties. After our mid-party transformation, we ditched our cloaks and maxi skirts for printed tees and mini skirts. The transformation was a lot of fun for us and unexpected by our friends at the party.

A huge thank you to Savanah for making the trip down to Kensico Dam to take some glam shots of us before the festivities. We knew that we wouldn't be able to capture our look the day of the party, so the photoshoot came in clutch. We lucked out the day of the photoshoot; the weather was so dreary, the sky was grey, and the plaza was completely deserted; we were able to really capture the mood we were looking for.
